ASSESS THE SITUATION

ASSESS THE SITUATION

When first coming upon a casualty you must make sure the area is safe for you. If you feel that you would be placing yourself in danger by touching or even approaching the person, you should not do so.

DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN DANGER, DO NOT BECOME ANOTHER VICTIM!

If you encounter a situation where two or more people are injured it must be decided who is to be taken care for first. The first step is to clear the area of those victims who can walk. If victims can get up and walk, they rarely have life threatening injuries. Tell them to go to a specific place for attention. Do not force a victim to move if they are in pain.

The next step is to find those people who are in the greatest need of treatment. Go to those people who are motionless first. Move quickly, less than 60 seconds for each person. Treat those people who are not breathing first and then those who have uncontrolled bleeding. When this is done wait for the medical personnel to arrive.
